Caption: Antique-optics restoration specialist John Augustine, at upper left, removes the 15.5-inch refractor lens from the Washburn Observatory telescope -- which is temporarily suspended upside down -- at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on May 7, 2012. Augustine will spend several days disassembling and cleaning he achromatic doublet lens, an assembly that weighs an estimated 50 pounds, using a series of distilled water baths and small brushes to free the elements of accumulated dust, debris and the occasional mud wasps' nest. The once-in-fifty-year refurbishment will conclude with reinstallation and collimating of the telescope's primary lens. (Photo by Jeff Miller/UW-Madison)
