Caption: International students who are first-year undergraduates sponsored on UW-Madison F-1 and J-1 visas listen to a presentation by Tina Hatch, an advisor in International Student Services (ISS), about legal information related to staying in the U.S. as a student during a Student Orientation, Advising and Registration (SOAR) session at Union South at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on Aug. 23, 2011. Sponsored by the Center for the First-Year Experience, the International SOAR sessions provide nearly 350 new students and their parents and guests an opportunity to meet with staff and advisors, register for classes, take a campus tour, learn about campus resources and move in a few days early to a campus residence hall. This year's event was extended three days to a weeklong program to allow students more time to settle in, socialize and acclimate before classes start. The additional time also allows students time to recover from extensive travel and jet lag prior to taking placement tests and participating in advising and course enrollment.
